March wandering

A little colour emerges

Making time for personal photography is so important, yet sometimes difficult to do. I got out a decent amount this month, both in a very flâneuring manner as well as with intention. Both types of photography make me happy.

For the flâneur photos, I generally head out with my camera, one lens and a good pair of shoes, and walk a lot. I tend to make fairly eclectic photos. Sometimes a theme emerges (see Canadian flags below) and sometimes they are just random images that are a good snapshot of the neighbourhoods that I frequent.

Weather often drives my more intentional photography. This month we had a decent southeasterly storm one day and dense fog on another. I definitely love the stormy days for the wind-driven waves that crash ashore. For these photos I nearly always employ intentional camera movement (ICM) to abstract the scene, hoping to capture the essence of the waves without being so completely literal.

I hope that it’s been a good photography month for everyone and I guess the real theme this month is that wearing good shoes when making photos is important.

A note about this image: A rule that I like to follow with wave photography is that I either photograph them at 1/4 of a second or slower, or a 1/1,000 of a second or faster. No point in photographing them at any in-between speeds. Also, I haven’t used a tripod for these photos in quite a while, so I travel pretty light: one camera, possibly two lenses and a stack of ND filters. Oh, a good pair of shoes is also useful here, for climbing around rocky shorelines.
