August wandering

Chez moi

After last month’s paddling trip, August has been spent much closer to home and this month’s photos reflect that.

This month also included a transition to new photo processing software. In anticipation of a busy last quarter of work and the impending renewal of my Adobe Lightroom subscription, I have made the switch to DXO PhotoLab 8. Having relied upon Lightroom to catalogue and process my photos since 2009, this transition is having a huge impact upon my workflow. I will write more about the transition and the reasons for the switch later, but I wouldn’t have attempted to make this change if PhotoLab wasn’t producing great results and I wasn’t convinced that it can handle the volume necessary for my work.

Back to this month’s photos, which are a collection of images made while I was flâneuring about. A few images captured while paddling, strolling the shoreline, exploring the west coast or walking downtown make up the scenes seen and photographed.

Thanks for reading and looking… à bientôt !

A note about this image: I don’t spend much time making street photos, but I do enjoy the exercise of “street photography.” I have found that it is very good practise for event photography, helping to sharpen my eye and reflexes for capturing candid images. While on the street, I prefer high-contrast light and doing a little fishing and a little hunting. My success ratio is very, very low, but I enjoy the process.

  1. Interested to see how your change to DxO works out. Photolab, NIK, and Filmpack have been in my workflow for a while now. However Lightroom masks and organization is the starting point. Photolab with good masking would be the thing that makes me move over 100%.

    • Ted, Thanks for your comments.
I have put a lot of thought and time into this, and I know there will be (have been) struggles along the way. A couple of points that helped me make the switch. If you save your metadata to your photos in LR, they will be available in PhotoLab. Also, once my subscription ends, I will still have access to Lightroom Classic (and the catalogue), just not the Develop module. So, I can still find, export and print from my previously processed events/shoots.
As for the masking, the non-AI masking in PL is very powerful, it just works differently from LR. So far, I am happy with it. Frankly, the heavy reliance upon AI in LR now takes me further away from capturing what I want in camera. I hope I don’t regret those words, but…
