In an Underwater Forest
Bull Kelp are a part of our local waters. This alga thrives around Victoria and I swim through kelp forest a lot, particularly in the Summer months. For the past month or so, I have been waiting for the right conditions to spend time photographing the kelp, before they start to die off.
Recently, I had a free afternoon, where the water and light conditions were fairly good. By this late in the Summer, the kelp are huge, but the fronds have started to look a little beat up, and the water is clouded with lots of nutrients, which makes for less “pristine” photos. None the less, it is always interesting to spend time around so much active growth…
A note about this image: To make these photos, I took my X100F in a Sea Frog housing, as well as a mask and snorkel. Returning to a favourite swimming location, which is located on the edge of a very active tidal channel, I spent 20 minutes floating through the dense kelp bed with my camera.
